Biographical Details
The brother of David Séguier, picture-restorer, dealer and painter who trained under George Morland. Séguier was apprenticed to Richard Hayward and executed one known marble profile medallion of David Garrick on a dark marble background (1). He was the father of another William Séguier, the first keeper of the National Gallery. According to Laurence Cust, whose information came from the family, Seguier devoted ‘himself chiefly to works of a monumental character’ and ‘kept steadily to that profession all his life’ (Cust 1909, 158). Given Hayward’s Warwickshire connections, it is possible that he may be identified with Peter Seager of Coventry.
