Biographical Details
A mason and architect of Manchester, he is best known for designing and building Ince Blundell Hall. He was also one of the principal masons at Knowsley (Earl of Derby’s Archives, DDK. 2002/1-7). He and his partner, a Mr Brooker, were the master masons for the Liverpool Exchange,1752-1755. In 1726 he was paid 10 guineas for drawing ‘ye plan’ of St George’s Church, Liverpool (City Corporation Records in GPC). His only known monument is a cartouche tablet ‘with excellent detail’ (1) (Gunnis 1968, 348).
He died on 2 June 1756, and was buried in St Mary,Walton, Liverpool, but the monument to his memory was lost when the church was destroyed in the Second World War. His wife Esther died in 1750. Henry was the father of Daniel Sephton and possibly also of ‘John Sephton, Liverpool, stone-cutter’, who died on 19 August 1770, aged 37, to whom there was also a tablet in Walton church (inf. Liverpool Public Library in GPC).
