Biographical Details
He was ‘workman and architect’ to the Duke of Northumberland and carried out a considerable amount of stone-carving for his patron. In the choir of Alnwick church he executed ‘a piece of Gothic trellis work, which for elegance of fancy and superiority of workmanship has seldom been equalled and perhaps never excelled’ (1). He died at Alnwick, and the author of his obituary opined ‘in the sublime walks of the Gothic, he stood without a rival in the county of Northumberland. In his intercourse with the world, he was peculiarly placid and engaging; and in the relative duties of father, husband, and friend, few characters have been more exemplary ’(GM, 1812, 601).
