Biographical Details
Charles was born in December 1794 and christened at St Andrew, Holborn, the son of Robert Shout and his first wife, Lucy. He was apprenticed to his father in 1809, and was taken into the business by 1820, when the firm was advertised as ‘Robert Shout and Sons’ in Robson’s London Directory (Clifford 1992, 46). In 1823 he was listed under ‘plaster cast makers’ in Pigot’s Commercial Directory and was living at 18 High Holborn. He acted as the sole executor and residuary legatee of his father’s estate in 1843, and died at the family home, Treherne House, West End, Hampstead in 1855. He was the father of Robert Howard Shout (1823-82), a West Country restorer and architect. For a list of the firm’s products see the entry for Robert Shout.
