Biographical Details In the Bury Post of 14 March 1725 was a notice that at ‘Mr. Singleton’s the stone-cutter’s shop in the Church Yard, Bury St. Edmunds, all persons may have Head and Feet Stones for graves at 10s. the pair; the headstone 4 foot long and 2 footbroad, with decent ornaments and a common inscription and proportionately for bigger or lesser sizes, performed by John Singleton, his father having wholly turned that branch of the trade to him’.
On 5 February 1738, John Singleton inserted a second notice in the same newspaper: ‘whereas a report hath been spread that I am leaving my trade here in Bury, the better to prevent it gaining credit amongst those who have occassion for anything in my way of business, I am advised by my friends to declare to the Publick, that I have no such intention, but rather to inlarge it, having taken in Thomas Singleton my nephew partner with me, the better to enable me to give all my masters due attention’.
