Biographical Details The son of Vincent Gahagan, he exhibited at the Royal Academy and between 1831 and 1837 and showed a statue of Newton at Westminster Hall in 1844 (4). The Art Journal reported that it possessed ‘marked merit’ and gave ‘promise of future excellence’ (AJ, 1844, 215), while the Literary Gazette commented, ‘Among so much that is worthless, it is a pleasure when we come to speak of that which can be admired. There is a charming softness in the finish of this piece, though the lower extremities appear to be exaggerated in length for the sake of importing elegance’ (Lit Gaz, 27 July 1844, 482). He also exhibited at the British Institution in 1831 and perhaps in 1832, though the works shown in the latter year may have been by his father. He died on 5 July 1858. His son Stephen Gahagan was also a sculptor.
