Biographical Details
The Gilbert family were masons in Lincolnshire in the 18th century. John Gilbert (1774-1839) was at Stamford by 1802, when his daughter was christened at St Martin’s. In 1807 he advertised that he had moved from Deeping St James and had worked for George Sparrow. He set up his own establishment in Beast Market [Broad Street] as a marble mason, making monuments and chimneypieces. By 1825 he was in Cambridge, where he died in Brunswick Place. He was succeeded in the business by his son, Henry Gilbert, who carved the later tablets, but Gunnis notes that ‘neither of them produced any outstanding work’.
