Biographical Details
Golden was apprenticed to William Halfpenny, of St George the Martyr, mason in 1760 (PRO, IR 22/151, in GPC). In 1781 he carried out repairs to Mr Wood’s house in Red Lion Square (Archives, Lord Brownlow, cited by Gunnis 1968, 175). Gunnis notes that his monuments are executed in coloured marbles and frequently have charming Adamesque details. His yard was in Upper North Place, Gray’s Inn Road. A tradecard of 1781, with a draped female figure pointing at a scroll, gives the information ‘IN GOLDEN/MASON/and/STATUARY/no 97 High Holborn’ (Banks 106.3).
