Biographical Details
Ballantine had a yard at 126 Upper Dorset Street, Dublin. He was clearly more than an ordinary monumental mason, for some of his memorials have fine carved reliefs. The tablet commemorating Caroline Hamilton features two weeping figures and his memorial to John Fletcher at Killeskey has an unusual relief of a child and a female figure kneeling by a coffin (2, 5). The memorial to George O’Connor has a bust of the deceased but since the memorial is signed ‘A. Ballantine & Kirwan fecit’ it is possible that the bust was sculpted by Kirwan, who is otherwise unknown (1).
