Biographical Details The York Courant of 26 August 1755 carried an account of the monument by Harvey and Charles Mitley to Mrs Ramsden (1), stating that Harvey came from London.
With the aid of Mitley, he provided a monument to Sir Tancred Robinson in 1755, dying before it was completed (2). Mitley’s sister, Diana Carr, petitioned a member of the Robinson family to transfer the commission to Mitley. She wrote ‘Sir William Robinson has bespoke a monument for Sir Tancred here at York of one Mr Havre, he was taken ill and died 2 or 3 days ago, this man my brother sent for from London a year and a half ago and he have workt for him ever since, now as Sir Tancred’s monument is not half finished Mr. Havre’s widow must have somebody to compleat it and as my Brother has assisted Mr. Havre in making the Drawing and have furnished him with hands in Doing the work thus far, he beggs you’ll Recommend hm to Sir Wm. that he may compleat it ... and see it carefully put up. I beg Madm. that you’ll speake to Sir Wm. Directly or Perhaps Mrs Havre may pick up some local tramper and spoil the work, as she is for London as soon as possible’ (Compton Newby Archives). Carr was unsuccessful in her plea and the commission was completed by Robert Avray.
