Biographical Details
Hayward was a mason, who twice held the post of Mayor of Lincoln. He came from a large family of masons and architects. His father, John (1708-1778) and uncle, Abraham (1692-1747) were both masons and builders from Whitchurch, Salop, who had settled in Lincoln. His brother,William (c1740-84) established himself as an architect in Shrewsbury and his son William (†1823/5) was surveyor to Lincoln Cathedral, 1799-1823. His sister, Ann, married into the Carline family and John Carline I was her son. The elder John Hayward designed and built St Mary’s Bridge, Lincoln in 1853 (Lincoln Corp Minutes 1710-1800, 341, 342, cited by Colvin 1995 483) and either he or his son carried out building work at Burton Hall, Lincs, 1767-71 (Archives, Lord Monson, cited by Gunnis 1968, 194). As master-mason to Lincoln Cathedral the younger John Hayward oversaw repairs to that building and in 1787 was paid £867 for restoration work on the west front and elsewhere (Lincoln Cathedral Archives, in Gunnis 1968, 194).
