Biographical Details
On 19 December 1739 William Purefoy wrote to Bayliss asking him to ‘set up a Turkey marble mantle piece & to lay 2 marble slobs [sic]’, which had been supplied by William Palmer for Shalstone House, Bucks. Two months later he wrote again asking for the work to be redone as Bayliss’s men had ‘set the marble up in our best parlour so that the marble that goes over athwart the Chimney is exposed to the fire, it being six or eight inches below the stone mantelpiece within side’ and so the fireplace could not be used (Eland 1931, 55). Gunnis describes the monument to Job Hanmer at Simpson as architectural, with a broken pediment and well-carved details (1).
