Biographical Details
John Linnell , the painter, was awarded a prize for sculpture at the Royal Academy Schools in 1810. Story relates ‘The question was raised among the students as to whether the sculptors could draw as well as the painters, or the painters model as well as the sculptors. Our artist was chosen to compete with Thomas Wyon, the medallist, in modelling in bas-relief a back-view from life ... and Linnell came off in triumph, beating the sculptor on his own ground’ (Story I, 1892, 50-1). The model was still with the artist’s family in 1892.
