Biographical Details
The well-known Georgian cabinet-makers were responsible for a considerable amount of decorative carving. William Linnell (c1703-1763) was trained as a carver and c1730 he set up a business based which later expanded into cabinet making and upholstery. After his death he was succeeded by his son, John Linnell (1729-1796), who became one of the leading cabinet-makers of the period. Commissions for carved work, particularly frames, overmantles and girandoles, constituted an important part of the firm’s work during the 1770s and 1780s.
