Biographical Details
In 1747 the Gentleman's Magazine published an article on marble-staining and its practice before 1660 by William Bird, of Oxford. The author stated that the art was not a lost one, ‘for we have lately been informed that the wife of Mr Long, stonecutter at Bow Bridge, Essex, performs it in a very curious manner’ (GM, vol XVII, Sept 1747, 599). In 1769 a Mrs Long was paid for mason’s work at Trinity House (Trinity House Archives in GPC).
