Biographical Details
In 1663 he agreed to undertake mason’s work and to make chimneypieces for Bishop Auckland palace, then being repaired by Bishop Cosin (‘Corr of John Cosin’, Surtees Soc, vol 2). Two years later he was paid for building the porter’s lodge (Durham Cathedral Lib, Sharp, 163, in GPC). He may also have erected the pillar commemorating King Edward I (†1307) at Sands End, near Burgh by Sands, Cumberland, which was executed in 1685 by a mason named Thomas or John Langstaff, or Longstaff.
