Biographical Details
He was the older brother of Lawrence MacDonald and assisted him in Rome. He was mentioned - as ‘Mr John Mcdonald the sculptor’ - in The Morning Post in 1858 (Wednesday, April 30, 1858, p.6), where it recorded that he had just bought two historic portraits of the Stuart ‘King’ James III and his wife Maria Clementina Sobieski from the Tucci family in Sezza, near Velletri, Italy. The newspaper recommended the works should be bought for the National Portrait Gallery. This suggests that MacDonald was also working as a dealer.
