Biographical Details
In 1847-48 Thomas MacEwan exhibited portrait and subject pieces at the Royal Scottish Academy but in later years he specialised in church monuments. From 1849 to 1859 he worked in partnership with his father at 82 South Clerk Street, Edinburgh; then, in 1860, he established his own business in Lothian Road where he worked until 1891. In 1861 he designed a monument to John Aitkin, for the Dean Street Cemetery, which was carved from his model by W Keith, of King Street, Aberdeen (3). In 1877 he was employed by William Brodie to carved the base for a statue of Sir James Simpson (6).
