Biographical Details
Maliphant’s memorials, frequently signed ‘JM’, are often flat, undecorated slabs. He lived in Bower Street, Kidwelly and left six children, three of whom were also stone masons. Several further generations of the family pursued the craft. He appears to have had a connection with the Paty family of Bristol, for a design for a monument executed by Maliphant appears in the Paty copybook (3). He was probably related to Richard Maliphant, a builder and surveyor of London, active c1810, and to George Maliphant (c1788-1865) who became an architect and was responsible for a book, Designs for Sepulchral Monuments (c1830).
