Biographical Details
William, 6th Duke of Devonshire went to Rome shortly after Canova died in 1822. He ordered copies of Canova’s famous lions on the Rezzonico monument in St Peter’s from Rinaldo Rinaldi and Benaglia. They were completed and set up at Chatsworth ten years later as a ‘monument’ to Canova, with a bust of Canova by Thomas Campbell and a copy of a self-portrait bust of Canova made by Rinaldi, in niches above them.
