Biographical Details
Bennett worked in partnership with John Flintoft in the early-19th century. An advertisement for ‘Bennett and Flintoft, Sculptors and Masons’ appeared in the York Courant on 13 January 1812 and they signed two monuments together (1, 2). The sculptor may also have been responsible for a tablet to an unknown subject at Kirkby Moorside, N R Yorks, dated 1826 and signed ‘Bennet’ (Pevsner, Yorks: N R, 1966, 215). He married Hannah Watson of York in 1815 (York Courant, 20 November 1815) and her death was recorded in the York Gazette on 29 November 1828. Bennett’s own death was announced in the same newspaper on 1 October 1831, where he was described as ‘sculptor, of St. Andrewgate’.
