Biographical Details
Bennison was a mason and architect with a yard in Mytongate, Hull. In 1801 he advertised in the Hull Advertiser, ‘Plans and Elevations drawn at shortest notice; Marble Chimney Pieces and Monuments executed in the neatest manner’. He worked principally in the East Riding of Yorkshire. From 1792 to 1820 he was engaged on works in Bridlington Harbour and in 1804-5 he rebuilt the bridge over the River Hull at Tickton designed by William Chapman. In 1800 he contracted to build the Register Office at Beverley and in 1804-14 he erected the court house and gaol there to the designs of Charles Watson. He prepared designs himself for rebuilding Routh rectory in 1815 (Bothwick Institute, York, MGA 1815/4) and designed the Zion congregational chapel at Cottingham in 1819. He refitted the interior of St Augustine, Skirlaugh in the same year and rebuilt the nave of All Saints, Bishop Burton in 1820-1. He may also have carried out building work at All Saints, Northallerton in the North Riding. He died on 25 March 1830 aged 80 (GM, 1830, i, 381).
