Biographical Details
He did a good deal of work at Chatsworth. In the third quarter of 1692 ‘Mr Borkett’ and his partner ‘Mr Carnall’ were paid for setting up heads in the great hall. The following year Burkett and another partner, Finch, supplied terminals, receiving their first payment in September 1693 (2). In 1694 they supplied a grey marble basin, which stands beneath the window in the lower state landing and was probably designed for the dining room (3), and they were later paid for pedestals supporting two statues of sphinxes by Caius Gabriel Cibber on the west front (4). They also ‘cleansed and set up’ eight heads on the staircase and in the hall, working at a daily wage of 3s 9d (Thompson 1949, 114, 125, 212). Berchett later worked at the Inner Temple, receiving £21 10s for ‘the eight figures at the end of the Robert Sawyer's building’ in 1706 (Inderwick 1896-1936, vol III, 399).
