Biographical Details
Berville, who came from a French family, studied modelling at the Dublin Society Schools. He lived in Cope Street, Dublin and carved ‘gentleman’s likenesses modelled in the most beautiful and excellent manner’ (Universal Advertiser, August 1754). These included a bust of Malone, in plaster, which he advertised in 1754 (1). He also introduced a pasteboard stucco for ornamenting houses, on which he modelled ‘ornaments for ceilings, and history pieces in alto-relievo, beasts, birds, flowers, etc., all ready for immediate fixing’ (Universal Advertiser, April 1757). In 1756, describing himself as a ‘paper stucco worker’, he petitioned the Dublin Society for assistance, but was refused.
