Biographical Details
Francesco Bienaimé’s workshop in Carrara specialised in marble copies of classical statues. His patrons included the 6th Duke of Devonshire, who stated that he had purchased eight statues and two vases from Bienaimé for the gardens at Chatsworth in his 1844 Handbook to Chatsworth and Hardwick (1, 3). These probably included statues of Apollo and Diana, a vase and a bath that he bought in March 1841 for £375 with carriage (Devonshire MSS Accounts of the 6th Duke of Devonshire, 23, cited by Sicca and Yarrington, 200, 8). A similar set of statues and vases was purchased for the People’s Park in Halifax, which opened in August 1857 (2, 4).
