Biographical Details
Bigée’s monument to General Cornelius Wood has a portrait bust set against a great baroque trophy of arms, in the centre of which is the club of Hercules, crowned with a plumed helm. To either side of the trophy are skulls with bats’ wings, holding in their teeth heavy fringed curtains which fall in thick folds (3). An entry in the Register of St Peter-in-East, Oxford, records the baptism of ‘Thomas son of Nicholas Bygee’ on 18 September 1707.
