Biographical Details
He was 18 and living at 38 Lower Belgrave Place, Pimlico, in 1842, when he entered the Royal Academy Schools on the recommendation of Richard Westmacott III. Two years later he sent statues of Chaucer and Sir Thomas More to the Westminster Hall Exhibition (1, 2). They were not well received. The Literary Gazette condemned both as ‘but feeble things’ (Lit Gaz, 20 July 1844) and the Art Union commented that the portrait of More was ‘by no means a favourable impersonation’ (AU, 1844, 215). He carved ornaments for the church at Wootton St Lawrence (3) and exhibited a work at the Royal Academy, giving his address as 11 Dartmouth Street, Westminster (4).
