Biographical Details
The family, whose badge was a fox, originally came from Flanders, and is said to be descended from Raginhart, a Gothic chief present with Alaric at the sack of Rome (Gunnis 1968, 318). The RSA Minutes state that Philip Regnart was born in the West Indies. He was taught by his father in 1760, became an apprentice carver in 1763, was with ‘Mr Walsh’ in 1764 and with ‘Mr Rickert’ in 1765 (Dossie 1782, 437-8). He won a premium on 22 February 1760 for a model of ornaments by a sculptor under 19 and four more by 1765. He became bankrupt in 1805. It is possible that he was responsible for some of the earlier monuments and tablets signed Regnart which Gunnis attributed to his son Charles.
