Biographical Details
Rhodes was apprenticed to John Carr, an architect of York, in 1757 (City Archives in Gunnis 1968, 319). He signs a large wall-tablet in coloured marbles in Leeds Parish Church (1). He was succeeded in the business by his son Edward, who worked from 1817 to 1834. They may have been related to John Rhodes, one of the contractors for St Mary, Bridgnorth, Salop, in 1792 (Archives Lord Sandys in Gunnis 1968, 319) and to Mr R Rhodes, a stonemason whose widow died early in 1806 (Monthly Mag, 1806, 21).
