Biographical Details
He entered the Royal Academy Schools in December 1833 on the recommendation of John Francis. The RA archives record that he was then 21 and his address was 56 Albany Street, Regent’s Park. He won a silver medal in 1836, having shown various medallic portraits, busts and bas-reliefs over the previous four years. The Literary Gazette considered his colossal bust of William IV to be ‘one of the most perfect resemblances of the King that has yet been executed; the effect of it is very grand’ (4) (Lit Gaz 1834, 299). He appears to have exhibited his bust of Democritus (2), first shown at the Society of British Artists in 1833, for a second time at the RA in 1868.
