Biographical Details
James Turnerelli, or Tognarelli, was an Italian modeller and figure-maker, the son of a political refugee from Italy and the father of Peter Turnerelli. He worked in Belfast and Dublin, and anglicised his name to ‘Turnerelli’. After the death of his wife, a Protestant Irishwoman, he moved to London. He was mentioned as a modeller in a letter from Joseph Lygo to William Duesbury in January 1796, and then in an article about his son in the European Magazine of 1821, which described him as a modeller ‘of considerable talent and ingenuity’ (Euro Mag 1821, 79, 387). None of his works has yet come to light.
