Biographical Details
Horace Walpole, in wishing to erect a monument to his mother in Westminster Abbey, ordered a figure of a Roman matron from della Valle in the early 1740s. Michael Rysbrack provided a drawing of the statue set in a pedimented frame. The attenuated draped figure, copied from an antique image of Pudicity, arrived in England in 1743, but was not erected by Rysbrack until 1754 and now stands on a pedestal with no frame (1). Eight statues after the antique were made for Lord Rockingham at Wentworth Woodhouse in Rome by Joseph Wilton, Simon Vierpyl, G B Maini, Bartolomeo Cavaceppi and della Valle (3).
