Biographical Details
Born in Dublin, he worked as a wood carver in his native city for many years. In 1835 he was in Swift’s Row, moving in 1846 to 107 Middle Abbey, in 1850 to 19 Mary Street, and in 1857 to 82 Marlborough Street. He was employed on the restoration of St Patrick’s Cathedral during the 1860s (1). He also worked in Westland Road church, and at St James, James Street, where he carved a reredos (2). He provided ornamental carving and furniture, including an elaborate sideboard for the brewer Sir Benjamin Guiness (7). After moving to Marlborough Street he was assisted by his sons Richard Barrington Boyle II (c1838-95) and James F Boyle (c1847-1911). The father and sons later worked as ornamental cabinet makers at 20 Upper Gloucester Street. Boyle died on 28 January 1891.
