In 1703 William Wynde, the architect, wrote to Lady Mary Bridgwater concerning lead figures: ‘Madam since my laste I have enquired about a statue fitt for yr Ladys garden, and in order thereunto I was at Mr Nostes [John Nost I]; Mr lasons [Lasons], Mr Varigne and Mr Ansgood [Richard Osgood ?]; who has the best Leaden figures 3 of wch I picked on ... a Venus and Cupide wch will cost about 12 pound, if single, withe out a Cupid 8 pound, the next is Juno ... about 10 but ye besy figure is an Extraordinary figur but one oor two of ye moulds have been [illegible] very good pieces with fine mantel or drapery caste very loosely over him ... this is the best of all tthe figures, they are moderne ...’ (Weston Hall, Staffs, Earl of Bradford MSS 18/4.
