Biographical Details
Thomas Waterworth I 1753-1829
Thomas Waterworth II 1788-1835
Thomas I was the son of Thomas Waterworth of Sutton-on-Derwent and Rebecca, née Whittal. In 1767 he was apprenticed to Christopher Richardson of Doncaster, whose daughter he later married. She had previously been married to Christopher Theakston. Thomas I was responsible for all the decorative stone-carving of the mausoleum, erected in 1788 at Wentworth Woodhouse by Lord Rockingham (9). He signed several monuments as ‘Thomas Waterworth of Doncaster’ including one with a portrait-bust, to William Dixon (2). The Simpson has an urn (3) and the Busk is a restrained tablet (1).
Gunnis assumed that Thomas II was responsible for the monument Captain Charles White, 1814, which has a relief of the graves of the Captain and his brother-officers at Bayonne (5). He died on 21 December 1835, aged 47, and was buried at Doncaster. His widow died on 11 September 1837, aged 42.
