Biographical Details
The son of another John Watson (†1757), a mason and surveyor of bridges in the West Riding of Yorkshire, Watson followed his father’s profesion.In 1759-61 he and his partner, John Gott, built the stone bridge which carries the public road past Nostell Priory. The bridge was designed by Sir George Savile and cost nearly £800 (Nostell Archives cited in GPC). He also built a pavilion at Seaton Delaval, Northumbs in 1756 (Seaton Delaval Archives, Newcastle Public Library, Box 4, no 1). Between 1760 and 1770 he was the master-mason responsible for building Serlby Hall, Notts, receiving payments as a mason and carver. Watson’s son, Charles (c1770-1836) was responsible for much architectural work in Yorkshire.
