Biographical Details
On 26 April 1833 John Waudby advised readers of the Hull Advertiser that he sold British chimneypieces ‘from 30 shillings’ at his premises in Waltham Street, Hull. He had an outlet also in York and perhaps at Scarborough. Gunnis dismisses most of his tablets as heavy and clumsy works in the Hellenic manner, of which the best are a gothic wall monument to Joseph Eggington, and identical tablets with draped urns to Charlotte and Henry Willoughby (3, 12). Five wall tablets to the Bell family of Portington Hall in the classical and gothic styles, record them as active Methodists (28). The Delpratt is a retarded composition with winged angels’ heads (25). At least one of the firm’s monuments went to the West Indies (26). (Inf. Gerardine Mulcahy)
