Biographical Details

The signature of 'Whitton, Beverley' appears on a number of unspectacular monuments in the region from the 1820s to the 1850s. The Barkworth (5) is a Gothic wall tablet, whilst the two tablets commemorating Constable family members both have a framed inscription topped by a sarcophagus (3, 10).

A William Whitton is listed as a 'stone and marble mason' at Toll Gavel in 1829 Pigot's Directory, p.904 and subsequent years). He is probably the same stonemason of that name in Beverley who drafted his will 13 March 1848. His executors were his sons Marmaduke Lawson Whitton and Robert Whitton, and his witnesses the Beverley stone masons Thomas Norton and John Megson (Yorkshire Wills and Probate, 1383-1858, Borthwick Institute for Archives, York). Robert Whitton, son of William and Mary, was baptised 4 November 1816 at St Mary and St Nicholas, Beverley, when the family lived at Lairgate. Robert is listed as a stonemason when he was admitted to the Beverley Constitutional Lodge of the Freemasons, on 3 July 1856 (Freemasonry Membership Registers: Register of Admissions, p.32), and was still running the business in Toll Gavel as late as 1882 (Whites Directory of Hull, 1882, p.29).
