Biographical Details
A carver and mason, he became free by redemption of the Masons’ Company on 1 October 1761. In 1763 he lived in Eastcheap and when he became bankrupt in 1778, his address was Glean Alley, Tooley Street, Southwark. On 18 and 19 January the following year his stock-in-trade was put up for auction. The lots included a great deal of marble, chimneypieces, monuments, and tablets, which suggests that he must have had a considerable business. Gunnis traced references in the Guy’s Hospital archives to extensive building activity at the hospital, noting that in 1774-77 Williams was paid £1,425 for his work on the west wing, and in 1777-78, £1,474 for the centre building.
