Biographical Details
The Gloucester Journal of 5 January 1807 states ‘On Thursday last was married at St Mary de Crypt, Mr George Wood, statuary, of the Black friars, to Miss Mary Bryan, youngest daughter of the late Mr. John Bryan, of this City’.
Almost all his monuments are found in the close vicinity of Gloucester. Gunnis considers his best to be to Charles George, which has a pretty relief of a mourning widow standing by an urn, while her little daughter clutches at her skirt (15). His stock monumental motif was the draped urn (2, 9, 14, 19, 24, 30) though there were occasional neo-Greek compositions (28, 29). His bankruptcy notice, which described him as a marble mason, was announced in the European Magazine on 8 July 1820 (Euro Mag 1820, 77, 561). He had a second yard in Cheltenham.
