Biographical Details
He was the brother of Thomas Wood of Oxford. Nothing is known of his work as a stonecutter, but he was involved in parish affairs at St Mary Magdalen, Oxford and worked in civic affairs as a bailiff in the 1680s and as mayor of Oxford in 1694. In 1696 he submitted a bill to the council for a sundial he had made on the south bridge (2). Pevsner notes that the Matthew monument is a ‘broad, gristly white cartouche, rather 1665 than 1685 in style’ (1). Gunnis notes that the work is not unlike the stone tablets of William Byrd of Oxford.
