He was to be admitted a freeman of Oxford in 1667 without fine if he could ‘in a workmanlike manner cutt or carve the King's Arms or such other signes for the use of the Citty as the Mayor or his brethren shall direct’ (Gunnis 1968, 443, quoting Oxford Council Acts, 1666-1701, OHS p 6). A payment which may be connected with this agreement was made to him in 1669 for ‘making a mould for ye University Arms’ (Vice-Chancellor’s Accounts quoted in GPC).
