Biographical Details
The wall monument to Sir Thomas Allen is a large and bold architectural structure 8 feet high, with Corinthian pillars, an open pediment and a flaming urn in the centre (1). The work was ‘erected by Edward Allen’ and signed ‘Allen fecit’, but it is not clear whether the two inscriptions refer to the craftsman only, or to the patron and craftsman respectively. Gunnis points out that the only craftsman with this surname who was a member of the Masons’ Company at the time was Peter Allen, so the monument is possibly his work. Peter Allen became free by redemption in 1674, and was the father of Theophilus Allen.
