Biographical Details
Brisley’s name was given as ‘Thomas’ when he was apprenticed to his father in 1814, but a local directory of 1828 calls him ‘William’. He was the son of Thomas Brisley, a mason who became a freeman of Rochester by purchase in 1795 (Rochester City Archives, cited by Gunnis 1968, 61). Gunnis notes that the medallion on his monument to James Forbes in Rochester Cathedral (2) is ‘a charming and competent work, surprisingly good for a local statuary’.
