Biographical Details
A statuary and architect of Bristol, he was the son of John Allen, a joiner. In 1752 James was apprenticed to James Paty II of Bristol and on 18 September 1780 he received his freedom of the city as a carver. He was appointed one of three City Surveyors in 1788, but resigned in 1792. He became bankrupt in 1790.
His tablets are well executed but conventional in design, featuring in most cases an urn set against a pyramid. His architectural work included repairs to St Mary Redcliffe, Bristol, where one of his tablets was erected (1). He was still living in 1810.
