Biographical Details
From a flourishing family of masons, seven of whose apprenticeships are recorded in the registers of the Masons’ Company. Thomas, the son of Richard Bromhall of Madeley, Salop, became a husbandman to James Smith (perhaps James Smith I) on 9 December 1670 and was made free of the Masons’ Company in 1677. Bromhall’s name is listed with John Walker, his apprentice, in the general search of 1678, under the heading ‘Mr Edward Strong’s men at St Pauls Church’ (Knoop and Jones 1935, 75). In 1705-7 he made several marble chimneypieces for Samuel Tufnell (1). Only two marble tablets have been identified (2, 3).
He had three sons, all of whom were formally apprenticed to their father. Samuel was apprenticed in 1693, Richard in 1703 and Joseph in 1705. In 1684 Bromhall took Henry Gates as an apprentice and in 1723 Michael, the son of James Bromhall, joined the workshop.
