Biographical Details
A sculptor called J Brown (or Browne) exhibited a group of Caractacus before Claudius at the Westminster Hall Exhibition of 1844 (17). One critic considered it ‘abominally bad’ and advised the artist to ‘break the whole thing up’ (Lit Gaz, 1844, cited by Gunnis 1968, 64). He may have been responsible for a number of monuments and tablets signed either ‘J Brown’ or ‘J Browne’, including a large gothic monument with standing figures of Hope and Charity commemorating Philip Saltmarshe at Howden, Yorkshire (12). It is not clear whether he was connected with Joseph Browne.
