Biographical Details
William Bull was apprenticed to his father, Thomas Bull, in 1726, and became free of the Masons’ Company in 1735. In 1737 he received £231 for alterations to Skinners’ Hall and in 1742 he repaired a house at Cripplegate for a Mr Pinch. About 1740 his name was included in a list of assistants of the Masons’ Company and his address was given as Mark Lane. The same document indicates that he employed Richard Bassett in Mark Lane and Mark Hawkins at ‘Mr Bull’s in Broad Street’, so he may have had more than one workshop. In 1755 he was paid for repairing a coat of arms at Trinity House and in 1757-9 he received a further £170 for masonry work at the Trinity Alms Houses in Stepney (Trinity House Archives, cited in GPC). Bull became bankrupt in 1752 and died 10 years later.
