Biographical Details
In April 1806 ‘Benjamin Burnett, Marble and Stone Mason, Halesworth’ advertised that he had ‘taken the Stock in Trade of Mr B Gosling, Bungay’ and intended to continue his business supplying ‘Marble and Stone Chimney-pieces, Monuments, Tombs, Grave-stones, Carn Floors &c &c’ (Norfolk Mercury, 5 April 1806). In August 1809 he announced that he had purchased ‘a large quantity of British Marbles from the Babicombe Quarry, in the possession of Mr J. P. Hubbard’ and that he had it in his power to ‘furnish Monuments, Chimney-Pieces, Slabs, Tables ...’ (Norfolk Chronicle, 26 August 1809). He must subsequently have become bankrupt for on 6 July 1811 the Norwich Mercury notified the public that he had ‘assigned all his Estate and Effects to Philip L. Powell, Esq. and Charles Brightly, Gent. in trust for the benefit of his Creditors,’ and his stock of spar and marble ornaments was sold by auction on 19th July (Bury Post, 17 July 1811). Shortly afterwards another advertisement in the Mercury announced that Burnett and Benjamin De Carle ‘had entered into Partnership’. This relationship was dissolved in April 1817 (Bury Post, 2 April 1817).
