Biographical Details
When Butlin’s widow applied to the AGBI for help she stated that her husband ‘had been sent to visit Rome by the assistance of Lord Spencer to perfect his art’. He exhibited various works at the Royal Academy and the Society of British Artists between 1828 and 1835, including a model for a statue of Lord Althorp to be executed in bronze, which ‘wanted proportion’ (GM, 1834, i, 631) (1). In 1836 he applied to the RA for assistance and was awarded 8 guineas. He died the same year and his widow, who was left with seven children, was granted a pension in 1837.
